Alice Kunneman was born to Otto and Elsie (Otte) Kunneman. She was the fourth of five sisters who grew up on the family farm northeast of Elkhorn. Her father, a strong believer in public education, transported his girls into town to attend school every day. As a young girl, Alice was a champion speller in Douglas County and also participated in musical performances with her sisters. After being graduated from Elkhorn High School in 1942, Alice attended business school in Omaha. She was engaged to Donald “Bee” Anderson of Valley, NE who was killed while serving in the Air Force during World War II. During this period of time, she worked for Robinson Seed Company in Waterloo, NE, Union Pacific Railroad in Omaha, and for a law firm in Washington, D.C. On December 8, 1946, Alice married Kenneth "Buzz" Hollins of Valley at Bethany Lutheran Church in Elkhorn. They lived in Lincoln, Wakefield and Craig (all in Nebraska) before settling in Fremont, where Buzz taught and coached at Fremont Junior High School and managed Memorial (swimming) Pool. They were long-time members of Salem Lutheran Church. Alice was primarily a homemaker and mother to her two daughters, Cindy and Cathy, but also worked briefly for Democratic Congressman Larry Brock and was employed at the Dodge County Courthouse for a number of years. After her retirement, she continued to be active as a volunteer with the Red Cross Bloodmobile for many years. Buzz and Alice were season ticket holders and attended Nebraska football games together for over 50 years. Alice also enjoyed watching and listening to a variety of college and professional sports, from golf and tennis to football, basketball and baseball. She was an avid fan of famed basketball professional player Michael Jordan. A lifelong Democrat, Alice always followed current events closely and loved politics. Her favorite television shows were Jeopardy and David Letterman, never missing an episode thanks to her ever-faithful VCR’s. The sun never went down on a Sunday without her finishing the Sunday crossword puzzle. Most importantly, she made it a point to read a passage from the Bible and her Daily Devotion every day and was so proud of the fact that she had read the Bible cover to cover at least twice. At the time of his death in September 1997, Buzz and Alice had been married for almost 51 years. In 1999, Alice returned to her home town of Elkhorn, devoting much of her time to her grandchildren whom she held so dear. Alice had many original recipes (especially her famous “pink soup” [tomato soup] and fresh pork tenderloin) and often provided her family with great home cooking. Sunday brunches at Grandma’s will always hold special memories for her grandchildren. Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law Cindy Gilroy and husband John of Waterloo, NE and Cathy Schubert and husband Roger of Fremont, NE granddaughters Amy (Gilroy) Knight and husband Wayne of Omaha and Chelsea Gilroy of Waterloo, grandson Tyson Gilroy of Omaha, great-granddaughter Madelyn Knight, sisters and brothers-in-law Leola and Edward Ohm of Elkhorn and Marilyn and Bill Kentopp of Falls City, NE, sisters-in-law Marge Hollins and Dottie Strenger and husband Jim all of Fremont, and many extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, sisters Arlene Zimmerman and Evelyn Paul, and great-granddaughter Emily Knight.
