Norma "Jean" Canada slipped peacefully into Jesus comforting arms on Wednesday, May 1, 2013, after exhausting complications due to long-standing health issues. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 4, in Johnson's Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Eddie Tingle officiating. Burial will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Jean was born June 20, 1924, in Baker, Ore., to Carrie (Flint) and Ernest Turner. She was the youngest of three children, which included older brother Jack Turner and older sister Roxy Brock. Jean attended schools in Paint Rock, Ballinger and graduated high school from Millersview in 1942. There she met and fell in love with Bill Canada; they were married on May 30, 1942. Shortly after, Bill left with the Air Force, during World War II. Being newly married with her husband in the service, she decided to go to work ? and that she did! She began a long career in communications. Her first job was with Southwestern State Telephone Co. in Ballinger as a switch board operator and quickly became the night chief operator shortly thereafter. She was promoted to day chief operator, a position she held until Ballinger went to direct dial in 1968. Jean went to work for GTE of SW in 1969, and became a supervisor in the CTI. She investigated fraudulent phone calls and assisted various law enforcement agencies. She absolutely loved her career path and the many friends and close ties she had inside and outside the GTE family. Jean had a wonderful sense of humor. She had a playful and somewhat mischievous nature along with a "Takin' Care of Business" kind of attitude. In their younger years she and Bill both had pilot's licenses. She loved to participate in any activity that Bill undertook ? which meant she was an avid fisherwoman; she could drive anything she could climb into. Oh yeah, she could water ski around any body of water, even though she couldn't swim. Jean retired from GTE in 1987, with fond memories. She was happy at home taking care of Bill and "Booggie" aka Booger. Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; parents; her sister, Roxy Brock; and her brother, Jack Turner. She is survived by her son, Mike Canada and wife Debbie of Fort Worth; daughter Jackie Mendiola and husband Johnny of Miles; grandson Billy Michael Mendiola; granddaughter Erika Moore and husband Omar S.; four great-granddaughters, Cameron and Kennedie Mendiola and Mya and Sydnie Moore of San Angelo; and nieces LouAnn Turner of Argyle and Judy Laxsun and husband Tony of San Angelo. The family wants to say a very special thank you to all the staff at Myrtlewood, Meadow Creek, Interim Hospice and Dr. Peter Chang. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to ASPCA; Meals For The Elderly; or a favorite charity. Published in GoSanAngelo from May 3 to May 5, 2013 --------------------------------------
