James E. Copeland (21 February 1924 - 23 April 2013) James E. Copeland, 89 passed from this life on Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at Quaker Hill Skilled Nursing Facility. James was born on February 21, 1924 at Elizabeth, Arkansas to the union of Charlie A. and Gladys C. (Shrable) Copeland. They precede him in death. After attending the eighth grade, James joined the United States Army serving in WWII. He moved to the Baxter Springs area in 1955 working as a mechanic for Yellow Freight, retiring in 1979 after twenty four years of work. James loved the outdoors, he looked forward to planting his garden every spring and was known for his Okra. When he wasn't in the garden he would frequently visit the river or strip pits with his boat and fish for Blue Gill. He was also know to spend many hours sitting under his carport and visit with friends as they stopped by to see him. He was an avid listener of Blue Grass music and wrote seven songs in which one was produced. James accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior at the age of 89 and was baptized at Quaker Hill. James is survived by one daughter Darlene Johnson; one sister Vernal Huett; several grandchildren and special friends Gary and Karen Krokroskia, along with a host of friends. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, April 29, 2013 at Derfelt's Baxter Chapel. Pastor Audie Tash will officiate. Burial will follow at the Lowell Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2:00-4:00 p.m., Sunday, April 28, 2013 at Derfelt's Baxter Chapel. Online condolences may be expressed at www.derfeltfuneralhomes.com.
