Obituary, 19 Nov 1999 - San Angelo, Tom Green County, Texas Mrs. W. Truett ``Sunny'' Smith, 74, died at home, as her wish, on Friday, Nov. 19, 1999. She was born in Laredo and married fellow Laredoan W. Truett Smith in Austin in 1946. They moved to San Angelo in 1949 to establish Truett's law practice. Sunny is survived by her husband, W. Truett Smith, five children and one grandchild. She took great pride in raising her children. Her philosophy was, ``Get an education, then get a trade.'' Likewise, her advice on educational matters was, ``If you see a course name you can't pronounce, take it.'' Consequently, her children are educated, independent-minded free spirits, qualities Sunny relished in herself. Her daughter, Pat Esslinger of Chevy Chase, Md., is married to Tom Esslinger and has one son, John. Pat retired from government service and is now an electronic meeting facilitator. Her son, W. Truett ``Pitchie'' Smith, Ph.D. and his wife, Gail, live in San Angelo. Truett in a psychologist in private practice. Her daughter, Debbie Smith, lives in Austin. She works for Hospice Austin. Her son, Corky Smith is employed in the computer software industry in Dallas. Her son, Stevie Smith and his wife, Feather, live in Durango, Colo. They are in the retail and wholesale fashion industry. Sunny was a unique individual who, though perhaps not known by name, was easily recognized in her trademark double-knit shorts, sleeveless blouse and house shoes (even in the coldest of weather) piloting her giant white convertible through the streets of San Angelo. She will be missed by many. Sunny would be thrilled if memorial contributions were made to either the American Civil Liberties Union, 125 Broad St., 18th Floor, New York, NY 10004 or the Southern Poverty Law Center, Development Office, 400 Washington Ave., Montgomery, AL 36104. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 22, in Fairmount Cemetery. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home.
