Bio

Violet (Janicek) Pratka, 90, passed away in the early hours on April 9, 2013. She was born on July 14, 1922, in Willow Springs, Texas. She attended LaGrange High School and upon graduation from Southwest Business University, she worked at Southland Life Insurance Company. However, the majority of her work life was spent as a secretary at Strake Jesuit College Preparatory, a job she truly excelled at and loved! Violet enjoyed cooking for family and friends. She loved shopping with her daughters, working crossword puzzles, and reading books. Her sense of humor and one line zingers will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Nothing would bring a smile faster to her face than seeing children and being around them. Many times she would be the office manager for the grandkids who loved to play office at her house! She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Robert. Violet and Robert traveled the world and made many lasting friends everywhere. One of her most memorable experiences was taking the Concorde from New York City to London and returning from Southampton to New York on the ocean liner, QE2. Violet loved Broadway, too, and she and Robert took many trips to New York for shows. In addition to Robert, Violet is survived by her daughters and their families: Anne Pratka, Lafayette, Louisiana; Susan Rideau and son-in-law, Roger, Missouri City, Texas, and Jane Balsam and son-in-law, Michael, of Houston, Texas. Violet leaves a legacy of love behind for her 6 grandchildren and their families: Lindsay and Michael Riedle, Chantal Harkrider, Kelly Owen, Jenny and Nick Kubiak, Kristi and Charlie Elsea, and Robert Balsam. She leaves behind 3 great grandchildren: Andrea Barrera, Kendall Riedle, and Cade Kubiak, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Violet leaves a sister, Jean Hales, Conroe, Texas, as well as sister-in-laws, Bernice Kulhanek, LaGrange and Bessie Janicek, Austin, Texas, to mourn her passing. Violet was preceded in death by her parents: Henry and Millie Janicek, her brothers, Edwin Kulhanek, Henry Janicek, and Dan Janicek, as well as her grandson, Bryce William Harkrider. Visitation will be at St. Michael Catholic Church, 1801 Sage Rd., Houston, Texas. A rosary will follow. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 539 E. Pearl St., La Grange, Texas, with burial to follow at La Grange City Cemetery. A reception to honor Violet's life will be held at Frisch Auf Country Club, 575 Country Club Dr., La Grange, Texas following the graveside service.
