Bio

William N. "Bill" Stokes, Jr. graduated from Baylor University, where he developed a lifelong love of English literature and old and beautiful books while studying under Dr. A.J. Armstrong. He became a lawyer upon graduation from Yale Law School. In World War II he served as a lieutenant in the U. S. Navy. He was assigned as a communications officer to the United States Naval Air Station in the Galapagos Islands, where the Navy monitored and guarded approaches to the Panama Canal. As a lawyer, and later as an executive, he served the Farm Credit Banks of Texas where he dedicated a long career to farmers and agricultural cooperatives in Texas. He spent his retirement years in Dallas where he practiced law, indulged his interest in collecting antiques and glassware, and authored several books, including a book of poetry titled An Exercise In Poesy. He collected books throughout his life, and he gave a priceless collection of old editions of Elizabethan literature to the Armstrong Browning Library at Baylor University. He was preceded in death by his wives: Maxine Parker Stokes, Ann Bradshaw Stokes, and Pauline Leidolf Stokes. A memorial service was held at Highland Park Presbyterian Church. ∼ WILLIAM N. "BILL" STOKES, JR., died peacefully, at home, January 7, 2002. He was born February 17, 1909, in Vernon, Texas to Hattie and William N. Stokes. He was a lover of opera and theatre, and in 1980, he and his wife, Ann conceived the Ann Bradshaw Stokes Foundation. Upon her death, he became Trustee of the Foundation established by her will which funds scholarships for students and projects of theatre programs in 18 Texas schools. He was preceded in death by his wives, Maxine Parker Stokes, Ann Bradshaw Stokes, and Pauline Leidolf Stokes. He is survived by his children, George Ann Harding and her husband,Malcolm, and their children, Scott, Julia and Lindsay; and William N. "Bill" Stokes, III, and his wife, Christine and their daughter, Lauren, his son Jonathan and daughter, Lacey, and their mother Barbara Stokes; and by his loyal and devoted caregiver, Lela Mae Martin, who had become his best friend. A memorial service will be held January 11th at 10:00 a.m. at Highland Park Presbyterian Church, Wynne Chapel, Rev. Bob Thompson, officiating.
