Elmer Daniel Birnie, 81, of Gothenburg, formerly of Broken Bow, was called Home on June 9, 2013, after a short but fierce battle with cancer. Elmer was born July 27, 1931, on Ryno Table to Robert and Grace Emma (Eggleston) Birnie. Elmer attended school at Yellow Dog Canyon, (occasionally) through the eighth grade. It has been told that during one school year, many of the students decided they would rather roam the hills and canyons than attend class, which they did until Grace Birnie found out and then school was officially over for the year as was the teacher's contract. Elmer attended Broken Bow High School until he returned home to help on the family farm and ranch. On Sept. 12, 1954, he married Margie Ann Williams. The couple made their home on a farm southwest of Broken Bow in the Ryno Community until moving to Broken Bow in 1990. To this union were born three sons, Ronald, Douglas and Kent. It was known that if there were a baby in the room, it wouldn't belong before Elmer would have that baby in his arms. Elmer will be remembered as a full-time cowboy and part-time hay grinder. He also worked at the sale barn, drove a truck and anything else he needed to do to provide for his family. For 25 years, he did custom hay grinding for D&D Feed yard, as well as others in the Gothenburg area until he retired in December 2011. He was rarely seen without his cowboy hat, which led to his title "Grandpa Hat". His personalized plate of GPA HAT got him out of a ticket or two. Elmer was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder. He was on the Ryno Township Board, Ryno School Board and was a 4-H leader. Elmer adored his grandchildren and could be found in the stands of many school activities. It was while watching a grandson's football game that he became reacquainted with Jonie Duis and soon knew they were meant to be together. Elmer and Jonie were married Jan. 1, 2006. Jonie and Elmer packed as much fun and happiness as possible in their seven years of marriage. Jonie worked alongside Elmer and cared for him in their home in Gothenburg until his death, Survivors include his wife of Gothenburg; three sons, Ron (Susan) Birnie of White Lake, Mich., Doug (Jeanette) Birnie of Broken Bow, Kent (Yvonne)Birnie of Grand Island, step-son, Michael Moses of Kearney; nine grandchildren, Sarah, Andrew, Nathan, Tyler, Logan, Daniel, Campbell, Natasha, Callum and two great-grandchildren Bryton and McKinley; two brothers John (Marion) of Broken Bow, Lon of Callaway; two sisters, Kate Palmerof Berwyn and Grace Ella Birnie, Broken Bow; In-Laws, Lyle "Gus" (Mary) Williams, Rio Vista,Calif., Ramona (Lary) Gronewold of Gothenburg and Charlene Morris of Gothenburg; a host of nieces and nephews and many, many friends.
