**************************************************** Leonard J. Kobes, the son of Joseph and Anna Berniklau, was born on a farm west of Wilber on November 26, 1894 and died at the Wilber Nursing Home on August 1, 1986 at the age of 91. He grew up on the farm west of Wilber and attended rural school near his home. On December 6, 1916 he married Mattie Kastanek. The family made their home on a farm near Friend for many years until they retired and moved to Wilber in 1960. He is survived by his daughter, Evelyn and her husband, Elmer Slama of Western; sons, Alvin and his wife, Marjorie Kobes of Wilber, and Bernard and his wife, Delores Kobes of Crete; 19 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Libbie Vavra of Milligan and Olga Levene of Grand Island. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mattie on April 23, 1978; brothers, Lumir and Edward Kobes, and a sister, Emma Kasl. He was a member of the Saline Center ZCBJ Lodge No. 389. The funeral was August 4 from the Zajicek Funeral Home in Wilber with the Rev. Paul Quackenbush officiating. Singers were Milo Chaloupka and Mrs. Norma Sysel, Mrs. Glenn Zajicek accompanist. Burial ws in the Wilber Czech Cemetery. Pallbearers were Alvin Dean Kobes, Robert Slama, Eugene Slama, John Slama, Leon Slama, Roger Slama, Darrel Kobes, and Bernard Kobes Jr. Source: The Crete News, August 6, 1986 **************************************************
