She remained with her aunt and uncle's family until she turned nine, at which time their daughter, Ella, married Alfred Scherzberg, and they then lovingly raised Emily from that time. Emily completed eight years of school in a little one-room, rural school, and then graduated from Mitchell High School in 1944. They then moved to Torrington in 1953, where Roger worked for Bloedorn Lumber Co, R & M Lumber Co. and later for the City of Torrington. Emily served as the timekeeper and later as secretary-treasurer of the Pathfinder Irrigation District for seven years following her high school graduation. While raising her family, she worked various part-time jobs at Holly Sugar, the County Treasurers and Goshen County Public Health, and later served as Case Manager at the on-set of the Community Based Adult "In Home" Care Program. Emily also drove a school bus for 33 years, retiring in 2010.She was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod. She was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, where she served as Sunday school teacher and was a member of the Altar Guild and the Lutheran Women's Missionary League. Emily belonged to the Goshen County Chapter of the Wyoming Historical Society, and she served two terms in the Wyoming State Silver Haired Legislature.
