John Joseph Walters, 79 of Hemingford, died Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at Heritage Estates in Gering, NE. He was born in Alliance on January 27, 1934 to Michael and Mary (Shimek) Walters. He served in the U.S. Army, being inducted Nov. 4, 1953. He took his basic training in Texas and then served in Germany as an aircraft mechanic. He was honorably discharged Oct. 24, 1955. On April 28, 1962 he was united in marriage to Carol S. Donovan at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Alliance. John was a lifetime Hemingford area farmer. He was a member of St. Bridget Catholic Church, American Legion Post No. 9, and formerly served on the board for Farmer's Co-op and District 40 rural school board. His hobbies included woodworking, fishing and attending area auctions to add to his anvil collection. He is survived by his children, Angela (Andrew) Grossman of Highlands Ranch, CO, Lori (Greg) Hamm of Colorado Springs, CO, Dan (DeEtte) Walters of Hemingford and Jennifer Walters of Springfield, VA, his grandchildren, Cade Grossman, Tayva Grossman, Cole Walters and Elijah Walters. He is also survived by his sister, Leona Wilkins of Hemingford, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Carol in 1992, his brothers, Floyd and Edward, a sister, Alma Walsh and an infant sister, Mary. Funeral services will be Friday, March 22, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Bridget Catholic Church in Hemingford with Father Lou Nollette officiating. Burial will be in the Hemingford Cemetery with military honors. Wake services will be Thursday, March 21 at 6:00 p.m. at St. Bridget Church. Bates-Gould Funeral in Hemingford is in charge of the arrangements.
