OBSEQUIES HELD AT FOREST GROVE FOR LUCAS MAN J.H. Betterton, 85, Dies At Home Of Son Thursday After Six Months Illness. Funeral services for James Harvey Betterton, 85, who died at the home of his son Nick Betterton in the Lucas Community Thursday at 11:45 a.m., after an illness of six months, were held at the Forest Grove Church Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. J.B. Snider of McKinney. Burial followed in the Fitzhugh Cemetery at that place with the Massie and Son Funeral Home in charge. The deceased had been a member of the Branch Baptist Church for many years. Born in Missouri, Sept. 27, 1885 [sic], the deceased was the son of Mr. and Mrs. William P. Betterton. When only ten years of age, he came to Texas with his family, and had lived in this county for 75 years. When a young man he was united in marriage to Miss Rachael Donaldson, who passed to her reward Sept. 5 [sic], 1928. Surviving children are Mrs. Mary Halcolm, New Hope; Jim Betterton, Blythe's Chapel; Mrs. Homer Butler, Lucas; George Betterton, Blythe's Chapel; Nick Betterton, Lucas; and one stepson Riley Salmons, Princeton. He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Mary Scalf, Oklahoma, and Mrs. Cora Clarkston, Electra; twenty-three grandchildren, fifty great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren. ---McKinney Daily Courier-Gazette, McKinney, Texas, Friday, October 25, 1940, page 6.
