Source: Houston Chronicle - (Jun/17/2009) JOSEPHINE HELEN HOLLABAUGH BURWELL, surrounded by family, Helen Burwell, 87, passed away peacefully June 13, 2009. Born July 1, 1921 in Midlothian, Texas, to Jacob and Effie Mae Hollabaugh, she was the last of 6 children. Helen graduated from Midlothian, Texas high school. During World War II, she worked at Hughes Tool Co. as a driver delivering mail and personnel to various sites, where she met William Burwell, the love of her life. They were married March 19, 1943. Though they lived in Houston most of their adult lives, Helen and Willie lived in Montgomery, Texas for a few years, where they helped found, design and build Chapel of the Lakes. Her stained glass cross remains the focal point, and landscaping the grounds continued to be a joy for years. Helen was a faithful, loyal church member of St. Luke's Presbyterian Church, from inception to her last day, where she was an acting Trustee, Elder, and served on numerous committees. Helen enjoyed every day of life, and cherished long lasting relationships with family and friends. Known for her artistic talent, she enjoyed many crafts including stained glass, painting, carving and decorating eggs similar to Faberge. Helen was devoted to her sons and their families and enjoyed frequent family gatherings and trips together. Helen was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, William Frank Burwell; parents; brothers, Hershel, Marshall and Leon Hollabaugh; sisters, Novella Cole and Thadie Mae Williams; nephews, Dexter and Ronnie Hollabaugh, Johnnie and Lonnie Williams; and niece, Lydia Pennington. Survivors include three sons, James Frank Burwell and his wife Leila, William Marshall Burwell and his wife Kim, Ted Carlton Burwell and fiance Amber; grandchildren, Andrew Burwell and wife Ashley, Sarah and husband David De Ita, Rebecca Burwell; great-granddaughter Riley Burwell, all of Houston; four nephews, two nieces; and many longtime friends including Mary Jane Halverson whose friendship provided so much joy and laughter for our Mom. Services are scheduled for 11 a.m., Friday, June 19, 2009, at St. Luke's Presbyterian Church, 8915 Timberside Drive, Houston. Memorials may be sent to Chapel of the Lakes, "177 Lake Estates" 21047 Chapel Drive, Montgomery, Texas 77316.
