Bio

Veteran: US Marine Corps-SGT WWII; POW; Guam Island defender Elwood Smith enlisted in the US Marines 22 May 1941. After completing recruit training in San Diego, PVT Smith was transported to Oahu, where he was further transferred to the Marine Barracks on Guam, where he was serving when WW2 began. The badly outnumbered Marine garrison had no option but to surrender when Japanese forces landed on 9 Dec 1941. PVT Smith and his comrades were interned at the Japanese Zentsuji POW Camp (Hiroshima #1) Shikoku Island 34-133 , where they remained until liberated on 9 Sep 1945. Pogue returned to the United States, where he recuperated briefly at the US Naval Hospital in Oakland, CA, before being transferred back east. Elwood Smith was discharged from that base in 14 Mar 1946 at the rank of sergeant, and returned to his native Winfield, Alabama.
