Bio

Larry J. Augustin, 71, of rural Shelby, died Monday, Oct. 1, 2012, at his home in rural Shelby. Funeral services for Mr. Augustin will be 10 a.m., Friday, Oct. 5, 2012, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, in Shelby, with Fr. John Rooney officiating. Committal is at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Shelby. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Church with rosary following at 7 p.m. Larry was born in Shelby on April 3, 1941 to Glen K. and Helen C. (Fozzard) Augustin. Larry lived all his life in the Platte River Valley southwest of Columbus. He attended Polk County rural school District No. 9 without ever missing a day of school. He graduated from Shelby High School with the class of 1958. He was a life-long member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. On May 13, 1961, he married Deanna Osborn at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Columbus. They moved to a house he'd built for his bride where they lived their entire married life. Cattle became his occupation and hobby. Beginning at an early age as he trailed his dad from sale barn to sale barn, and later after completion of high school he went to work for Augustin Brothers, where he learned the cattle business from the bottom up. In 1961, he began order buying for Augustins. In 1979, he and his wife started L & A Order Buyers, which they continue to operate with their partner and son-in-law, Tim Hopwood. Larry believed a man's word and a handshake were a sufficient contract. It was not unusual for him to drive 50-60,000 miles a year to cattle auctions in Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Wyoming. He served as an usher and on the parish council at Sacred Heart Church. Larry is survived by his wife, Deanna; six daughters, Kathy (Tim) Hopwood, of rural Shelby, Barbara (Kirk) Hochstein, of Wayne, Meshelle (Don) Ferguson, of Falls City, Stephanie (Bryan) Jacobson, of Grand Island, Tamara (Travis) Weber, of Shelby and Theresa (Doug) Van Dyke, of Omaha; 20 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Patricia (Wayne) Davis, of Columbus, Sandra (Dan) Reisdorff, of Lincoln, and Carole (Rick) Hoyt, of Peoria, Ariz. His love for his family was unconditional. As his daughters married and moved on he told them he didn't care where they lived, but he wanted his grandchildren in a 100 mile radius. Larry was preceded in death by his father, Glen Karl Augustin in 1986; and his mother, Helen C. Augustin in 2012.
