Gravesite details

The former LDS church is now owned by the Village of Moenkopi. The rectangular cemetery with 27 graves is fenced and next to that building and near a trailer where a family lives. The graves have not been maintained. Historical plaque with names.

Bio

Stephen Martindale, b. 8 Oct 1810 in Dorset, V T; m. (1) Julia Ann Clark, b. 1 May 1820 in Union, OH. She d. Nov 1894. He m. (2) 30 May 1854 Eliza Lewis, b. 21 Sep 1831 in Delaware Co., NY; m. (3) 26 Feb 1857 Ellen Louisa Showell, b. in England. She d. 11 Aug 1863. He res. in various places, joined the Church of Jesus of Latter-day Saints in an early day and passed through the trials and labors of Nauvoo, IL. He had the "Farnsworth Vision" a short time before the martyrdom of Joseph and Hyrum Smith. Came west with the exodus from Nauvoo, settled on Keg Creek, IA, not far from Kanesville, engaged in mill building, was a carpenter and builder by trade. He emigrated to UT 1852, settled at Pleasant Grove, thence to Richfield and Joseph City, UT and from there to Moan Coppy, AZ; had a large experience in frontier life and all the vicissitudes associated therewith, was a true and trustworthy man of sterling integrity and commanded respect and esteem among his fellows wherever he lived. He had a large family and set an example worthy for them to follow. He d. 19 Sep 1885 at Tuba City, AZ ∼ FARNSWORTH - In Tuba City, Moan Coppy [Moenkopi] Ward, Arizona, Sept 19, 1885, after an illness of 27 days, with the gravel Stephen Martindale Farnsworth, born October 8th 1809, in Dorsett [Dorset], Bennington County, Vermont. He embraced the Gospel in 1840, and migrated to Utah in 1852; lived in Pleasant Grove many years, then removed to Joseph City, Sevier County, and during the past three years has resided at the place of his demise. He died a firm believer in all the principles of the Gospel. Deseret News 7 November 1885
