Marvin Duane Cerny was born to John D. and Josephine Zavodny Cerny near Dorchester October 23, 1932 and died December 23, 1989 in Crete at the age of 57. Cerny grew up on a farm south of Dorchester and graduated from Dorchester High School. He served four years in the Navy and during the Korean Conflict was aboard the aircraft carrier Philippine Seas. He later attended business college in Omaha. Cerny was an avid bingo player and a fan of television game shows. He traveled a great deal to pursue these hobbies. He was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles, Crete VFW Blue Valley Post, Disabled American Veterans and Southview Baptist Church of Lincoln. He is survived by his mother, Josephine Cerny; sister and brother-in-law Bernice and Don Jeffries; nieces, Janet Spencer, Joyce Smith; aunts; uncles; cousins; eight grand-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, John Cerny. Services were held December 27, 1989 at Kuncl Funeral Home with the Rev. Harold Richardson officiating. Soloist was John Findley with Pat Butt accompanying. Interment was in Wilber Czech Cemetery with military rites by VFW Post 4959 of Crete. Pallbearers were John Cerny, Warren Cerny, Harold Cerny, William Smejdir, Percy Plucknett, Doug Smith, and Dick Spencer. Source: The Crete News, January 3, 1990
