Bio

David Earl Brittain, 90, of Clifton, passed away early Sunday morning, January 27, 2013, at his residence near Clifton. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013, in Lawson Funeral Home Chapel in Meridian. Dr. Jerry Smith officiating. Burial in Fairview Cemetery in Bosque County, Texas. There will be no formal visitation. David was born in Bosque County, Texas, to the late Frank Oscar Brittain and Ida Mae McDaniel Brittain. His mother died when he was 9 months old, and he was adopted by William R. and Mary C. Downey , a very kind and loving family. He was then known as "Earl Downey". David was united in marriage to Mary McLaurin on July 15, 1952, in Valdosta, Georgia. He served 20 years in the U. S. Army, retiring in 1966 as Sergeant First Class E-7. He then went to work for Braniff Airlines for 16 years as an aircraft mechanic and their bankruptcy forced his retirement in 1983. David and his family returned to his hometown of Clifton, where he resided until his death. He was a member of the Clifton First Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Chester, Douglas, Cecil and Frank Brittain, Callie Edwards, Lucille Horton, Lilly Solomon and Tommie Devenport. His adopted siblings, Percy Downey, Perney Downey, Herbert L. "Hokey" Downey, Bertha Bearden, Elizabeth "Lukie" Hutchison and Tennie Mae White. He is survived by his wife, Mary, of Clifton; daughter, Sharmon Bittain Roberson, of Floresville; grandson, Steven Keith Roberson, of Floresville; sister-in-law, Florence Fowler, of Fayetteville, North Carolina; number of other relatives and friends.
