OLD SETTLER PASSES AWAY Mrs. Cathrine L. Shepherd died at the home of her son, Lewis Shepherd, in North Villisca, Sunday. She was born in Dearborn county, Indiana, June 26, 1821, having exceeded the three score years and ten allotted by the Psalmist by eleven years, ten months and fourteen days. Her maiden name was Cathrine L. Garrison, and she was married to Jeremiah Shepherd when she was twenty-two years of age. To them nine children were born, six of whom survive: Mrs. E. A. Lewis of Hawleyvilie; Mrs. John Langford, Whitton, Missouri; Rebecca Feight, Nampa, Idaho; Silas, Lewis and Jeremiah, jr., of Villisca. The husband, who is in his eighty-first year, also survives. This aged couple lived long enough to earn the wonderful record of having forty-two grandchildren and thirty-one great grandchildren, all living. They came to Iowa sixty years ago, when Iowa was still a territory, settling near where Ottumwa now stands, and from there they removed to this county in 1870, having lived on a farm in this vicinity since that time. Of late years, however, they have made their home with their children. The decedent has been a member of the M. E. church all her life, her father having been for long years a minister in that religious body. Owing to feeble health she has been unable to attend church services for several years, but has always been a devoted Christian. The funeral services were held from the M. E. church at 11 o'clock yesterday morning, Dr. C. J. English officiating, interment being in the Villisca cemetery. Those from a distance who attended the services were Mrs. Mary Milkey of Afton, Elias Lewis of Modale, and L. Shepherd of Afton. The Villisca Review - May 13, 1903 * Gravestone and Obituary do not agree on birth year.
