James E. Bates, 86, went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, January 22, 2013, surrounded by loved ones in his home. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, January 24, 2013, in the J.E. Keever Mortuary of Ennis. A Celebration of his life will take place at 11 a.m., Friday, January 25, 2013, in the J.E. Keever Mortuary Chapel of Ennis with Pastor Keith Bates officiating. Interment will follow in Crisp Cemetery. James Edward was born in Bristol, Texas, to the late Charlie and Omie Iler Lewis Bates. He grew up and went to school in Bristol. James met Betty Prda in July of 1954 and they married on October 21, 1954. They made their home in Ennis where he owned a floor sanding business. He retired from Ennis Automotive in 1988. James was a devoted member of Garrett Baptist Church. He enjoyed the country life, building things and raising chickens and ducks. One of his favorite hobbies was picking up cans. He is preceded in death by three brothers; two sisters; granddaughter, Shelly Duran; and great-grandson, Alex Case. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Betty; daughters, Linda Widner and her husband, Joe, and Tina Donahoo and her husband, Bill; son, Keith Bates and his wife, Cristina; grandchildren, Natasha Widner Walker, Eric Ortiz, Heather Donahoo, Billy Donahoo, Tyler Widner and Christopher Bates; eleven great-grandchildren; brother, Floyd Bates and his wife, Jeanette; sisters, Pauline Stewart, Lauther Ree Stewart, Mae and her husband, Lee Roy Burchfield, Geneva Cutbirth and her husband, Henry, and Dorothy Clay and her husband, Jack; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
