Harry Gordon Copenhaver Jr., 85, of 1007 Knollwood Place, Martinsville, who founded a local printing company and was active in civic and political groups, died April 28, 2001, at his home. He was born in Richmond on April 11, 1916, to the late Harry Gordon Copenhaver Sr. and the late Carrie Brodie Copenhaver. He also was preceded in death by a sister, Alice C. Cultice. Copenhaver was educated in Richmond and Bristol, Tenn., and graduated from the University of Tennessee with a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1941. He was a former member of the university's Century Club. He owned Copenhaver Printing of Martinsville, which he started in 1948. The company later became Hooker Printing and now is part of Haverline Labels. Copenhaver was a member of the Board of Trustees and the Foundation Board of Directors for the Virginia Museum of Natural History. He had served as president of the Martinsville Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow, and was a past-president of the Virginia State Printers Association and the Martinsville Volunteer Fire Company. He had served as chairman of the American Cancer Society, American Red Cross, Salvation Army and the Martinsville Republican Party. He was a member of the National Republican Party Inner Circle, which is by invitation, and served on the Republican State Central Committee. He also had served on the board for the Danville Technical Institute and the Southside Health Services Board; on the Mayor's Commission of Human Values; and was a member of the delegation which secured Martinsville as an All-American City. He was a long-time member of First Baptist Church of Martinsville, where he served as deacon, usher and Sunday school teacher; was a charter member of Chatmoss Country Club; and was a former member of Pinehurst Country Club. He was a volunteer in the Ukraine with Global Volunteers Partners in Development, which helps educate business and the community on the free enterprise system; was a past-vice president of the Martinsville-Henry County Chamber of Commerce; and was an Eagle Scout and Cub Scout leader. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, La Verne Benton Copenhaver of the home; two daughters, Betty Sue Copenhaver and Carol Copenhaver Hooker, both of Martinsville; and a brother, G. Wesley Copenhaver of Collinsville. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church of Martinsville with Dr. Thomas R. McCann and the Rev. Ferd Wagner officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Burial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Mckee-Stone Funeral Services. Memorials may be made to the Virginia Museum of Natural History, Hospice of Martinsville or a charity of the donor's choice.
