1870 White County AR Henry Tolle & Mary, living next to Hugh McAfee & Rosanna Henry and Polly Toal are listed as Henry Toole and Mary on the 1870 Federal census, Gray Township, White county Arkansas. They are listed just under Hugh McAfee and his family. According to Hilliard Shand's daughter Caloma, Henry had "reformed from the habit of drink and was a sweet, quiet old man".She wrote this in 1940 describing the last time she has seen her grandparents and Uncle Almeran before leaving for Texas with her mother and father in 1865. Almeran Shands kept Henry and Polly close to him for the entirety of their lives. He also lived in Arkansas. I am descended from Nancy Jane Toal, daughter of Henry and Polly. She left records indicating her mother had died in 1875, Searcy, White County Arkansas and her father dying in the same place. I do not know the year of his death but I believe it was between 1870 and 1880. Posted by: sharleen mulqueen ====== Henry Toal was my 3rd gr grandfather. He and his wife Polly did go to White County ARK with Almaren Shands. Apparently, Almaren was quite fond of them. They are listed on the 1870 White County Census. and according to Tax records, Almaren died in about 1876. We never did find a will. Not listed on the 1880 census. We have pictures of Nancy Jane. We have searched for the resting places of Polly & Henry Toal. We would like to place a marker if they do not already have one. The family histories we have read are much "kinder" than some. Henry was a founding member of the Masonic Lodge Chapter in Summerville, MS. As also was Hilliard Shands. ...by Glenn Toal
