Bio

We mark the passing of Eben James Kubicek who entered the world on February 13, 1937 and departed it on January 13, 2013. He was the second son born to Adolph R. and Rose C. Kubicek of San Antonio, Texas. Born at Fort Sam Houston, he graduated in 1955 from Sam Houston High School in San Antonio, where he was captain of the football team for two years. After graduation, he served with the United States Navy as an aviation machinist in Hawaii, Alaska and Japan. He continued his career in aviation with Braniff International Airlines and later at Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio for 18 years until his retirement in 2001. He met his wife Sandra Kubicek (neé Guthrie) while both were working at Medina Base and they married in 1967. His work in aviation extended beyond his career. He loved to travel both domestically and abroad. He enjoyed travelling throughout his native Texas, especially stops for Czech kolache throughout Texas and fishing trips to the Texas coast. He and his wife traveled abroad to London, Turkey, Austria, Guatemala, the Netherlands, and the Czech Republic. He looked forward to the planning and execution of his annual road trips to visit his son and grandchildren in Michigan as well as the Folk Art Festival in Santa Fe. He also was struck by the beauty and expanse of our nation's National Parks, especially Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon – remarking that he would love to go back some day to more fully appreciate the beauty. Throughout his life, he took an interest in the outdoors. He was an avid gardener and fisherman. His appreciation of nature extended to his love of wildlife where he took care of the neighborhood deer, birds and his own beloved pets. He also took a keen interest in do-it-yourself projects, helping family and friends in their hour of need. He had a lifelong love of the game of dominoes, which he played loudly until the wee hours with his brothers and other family members. His Czech heritage was an important influence in his life. He enjoyed making sausage and barbequing on the back patio with his polka music and Schlitz beer. Later in life, he took a greater interest in politics where he volunteered with the 2008 Obama campaign and served as an alternate delegate to the Democratic convention. He ardently believed in service to his community. For over a decade, he was a faithful volunteer for the local Meals on Wheels, delivering food to the elderly and homebound individuals. He also volunteered with Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church where he served with the hospital ministry providing the Eucharistic sacrament to those in need. Above all else he was devoted his family. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Sandra; his son and daughter-in-law, Paul Kubicek and Alyce Howarth (Royal Oak, Michigan); his daughter Katrina Kubicek of Los Angeles, California; his grandsons Jonah and Asher of Royal Oak; and his three brothers Harold Kubicek (San Antonio), Donald Kubicek (Sinton, Texas) and Lee Kubicek (Frisco, Texas).
