Bio

Wanda Mathews, 81, of the Redland Community, passed away January 12, 2013 in El Dorado, Arkansas. She was born November 5, 1931 in Gaylord, Kansas, the daughter of Clay and Geneva Green Holmes. Wanda had lived in McCurtain County since 1963, moving here from Norfolk, Virginia, when her husband retired from the military. She was a retired LPN, having graduated from the Texarkana Vocational College School of Nursing on July 15, 1969. Wanda was a member of the Calvary Missionary Baptist Church and the Redland Quilting Club. She enjoyed painting, quilting and sewing. She and Samuel Rex Mathews were united in marriage on October 27, 1950 in Yuma, Arizona and they shared 62 years together. Wanda was preceded in death by her parents; grandson Larry Smith; granddaughter, Sarah Hess and a brother, Fred Holmes. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband Samuel Rex Mathews of the home; son and daughter-in-law, David and Moira Mathews of Baytown, Texas; daughters and sons-in-law, Pam and Freddie McKinley of Crossett, Arkansas and Penny and Alfred Stark of the Redland Community; brothers and sisters-in-law, Jay and Carol Holmes of Crane, Missouri and Wayne and Mary Lou Holmes of Aurora, Missouri; sisters and brother-in-law, Joyce Van Nortwick of Whitehall, Michigan and Jean and Don Shade of Springfield, Missouri; grandchildren, Mark Mathews, Melanie Watkins, Holly Wright, Candice Reed, Chris Ebert, Tabitha Hess, Jennifer Forbess, Jessica Vinson and Cody Hess; great-grandchildren, Samantha, Heather, Alyssa and Hudson Mathews, Brianna Wright, Dylan, Clayton and Sydney Watkins, Nathan Reed, Chloe and Eli Forbess, Jonas Vinson, Casy and Kaitlyn Smith and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at 10am at the Bunch-Singleton Chapel with Bro. Tracy Reed officiating. Interment will follow at Redland Cemetery
