Funeral services for Laverne Victor, 83, of Portales will be at 1:30 PM, Friday, January 11, 2013, in the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel with Leroy Thomas and Dee Lancaster officiating. Burial will follow in the Causey Cemetery with Korey Carter, Jesse Jones, Justin Victor, Jarred Burris, Clint Hamilton, and Houston Wall serving as pallbearers. The members of the Dora Senior Citizens, as well as Wayne Victor, Terry Victor, and Mickey Hargrove have been named as honorary pallbearers. The family requests that memorial donations be made to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Cancer Center, 7412 University Ave., #2, Lubbock, TX 79423. Laverne Victor was born February 10, 1929, in Menard, TX, to the home of Ethel and John O'Neal and died January 9, 2013, in Portales, NM. The O'Neal family moved to Causey in 1942 when Laverne was 13 years old. On October 7, 1945 in Causey, she was married to Cecil F. Jones. She and Mr. Jones farmed side by side until his death on January 29, 1979. In the mid to late 1950's they also ran the Causey General Store for several years. On June 20, 1982 in Reno, NV, she was married to T.D. Devenport. Mr. Devenport also preceded her in death on February 26, 1996. On December 5, 2000, she was married to Kenneth Victor. They made their home in Portales until her death. Mrs. Victor was a longtime member of the Causey Church of Christ, and had attended the Valley Church of Christ in Portales. Laverne was a member of the Causey Homemaker's Club for many years. She was a sponsor for the 4-H program while her son was active in school. She was an excellent quilter, and had quilted for the public for a number of years. She also enjoyed crochet work. She and her husband, Kenneth, were active in the Dora Senior Citizens where she enjoyed the fellowship and playing pool. Laverne was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth Victor of the home; a son, Jimmy Jones of Bosque, NM; two step-sons, Wayne (Lela) Victor of Pep, NM, and Terry (Elizabeth) Victor of Blanchard, OK; a step-daughter, Debra (Mickey) Hargrove of Portales; two grandchildren, Tena Johnson and Jesse (Jamie) Jones; two great-grandchildren, Korey Carter and Aspen Sowder; as well as numerous step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and by her best friend, Kathy Taylor of Causey. Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents.
