Before reading the following info there are differences of Bessie's birth year from b/c 1904, 1900 census- 1899, 1920 census -- 1900 ; d/c ,obit and date on stone (are the same 1906). I will leave the birth year as to what is listed on the d/c. obit, and tombstone; and people researching can have all the different dates to work with. ------------ Arkansas Birth Certificate Name: Bessie Dean Mathews Gender: Female Birth Date: 29 Jul 1904 Birth Place: Cerro Gardo, Little River, Arkansas Father: Sidney Parks Mathews Mother: Minnie Permalie Mathews (woman listed on the Bessie's birth certificate is her step-mother, not her mother. I asked a person supplying me with info about Bessie; how could a woman from a later marriage be listed as mother on the birth cert. I'm enclosing what they sent me: I think I know how Bessie's birth certificate could be wrong. I came across an Arkansas birth certificate that was created for " birth's before 1914". It had a place for the doctor/midwife to attest to the birth Or the closest relative to verify the information. With the early deaths and multiple marriages and blended families in this Mathews line, I think they could have easily provided incorrect informant. Mary Stout appears in a detailed family history created by Miss Jim P. Matthews for a 1970 Matthews family reunion; as the mother for Bessie Matthews(Mathews). Miss Jim P. was quite a historian and took her research seriously. Also she had relatives who knew the family history. I can find no birth or death records for Mary Stout Matthews (Mathews). Since Arkansas birth certificates were not required until 1914, it is possible that a certificate was created after that time. If so, Bessie might not even have known her mother's name , because Minnie was the mother who reared her.
