Marvin Eugene Gholson Sr. DALLAS - Marvin Eugene Gholson Sr., 85, formerly of the Big Country, died Oct. 7 at his home. Services were Oct. 12 in Sparkman-Hillcrest Funeral Home Chapel. Entombment was in Hillcrest Memorial Park Mausoleum. Mr. Gholson was born in Anson and grew up in Haskell. He graduated from Hardin-Simmons University in 1936 and earned both his master's and doctorate degrees from the University of Texas. He worked for Magnolia Petroleum Co. and Atlantic Refining Co. He then served with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He married Sybil Glass in 1945 in Abilene. While in the Air Force, he was stationed in England, Tunisia, Sicily, France and India before retiring as a reserve major. He taught at the University of Southern California, University of Texas and Dallas Baptist University before retiring. He was a member of First Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, of Dallas; one son, Marvin Gholson Jr. of Denton; one sister, Elsie Gholson Hadley of Burleson; two brothers, Buster Gholson of Abilene and Jack Gholson of Richardson; and several nieces and nephews. Memorials may be sent to Dallas First Baptist Church or a favorite charity.
