Bio

Betty Sue "Susie" Shumate was born in Dallas on Dec. 14, 1925, and passed away on Dec. 21, 2012, one week following her 87th birthday in Austin. She graduated from Sunset High School in Dallas in 1943 and married her sweetheart, Bill Branch, on Sept. 18, 1943. She was a wonderful homemaker and mom and had a great love of books and travel. She was a Linz Pin honors recipient in high school and continued her love of learning throughout life. She was a member of The Fine Arts Guild, and served in the Altar Guild at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Dallas for many years. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Susan Leigh; parents, Clyde and Madoline Shumate; her sister, Peggy Lou Pettijohn; and her beloved husband of almost 62 years, William Curtis "Bill" Branch. She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Pat and Tom Fernandez of Tyler and their five daughters; daughter, Cynthia Branch Mills of Dallas, previously of Tyler and Longview; her son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Maria Theresa Branch of El Paso; and daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer Lane Branch and John Charles Traber; and grandchildren, Treska Anne Giebitz and Michael Brandt Giebitz, all of Austin. A memorial service for both Bill and Susie will be scheduled in the spring at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, where they will be interred together. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice Austin, whom we would like to sincerely thank for their great caring, comfort and support. We would also like to express gratitude to everyone at Regency Village Care Center for their genuine care as well as her two favorite caregivers at The Pavilion at Great Hills - Lin and Becky, who treated her as their own mom. She will be truly missed for her caring, wit and determination. Published in Tyler Morning Telegraph on January 4, 2013
