Bio
James was born in 1866 (not 1876) in West Virginia. He can be found on the 1870 and 1880 censuses, with his parents Argalon and Sarah, and his siblings. He married Rosella Cain in 1888 and they had several children together. At some point after 1900, he made his way west and met Hallie Belle Waters in Nebraska. He married her in Canada in 1905 and they had a bunch more kids out on the Great Plains. On all the censuses, 1900 and later, he maintained that he was born in 1876. I don't know if this was to avoid potential legal repercussions for abandoning his first family or just plain vanity. If anyone knows the scoop on what happened between James and Rosella, please message me. I'm curious as he's my 2x-gr-grandfather via his second marriage.
