Joe Viktorin, Jr., age 82, of Wharton, died Saturday, May 14, 2005, at his home following an extended illness. He was born December 8, 1922, in East Bernard, the son of the late Joseph and Vlasta Polasek Viktorin. A 1941 graduate of Wharton High School, Mr. Viktorin was a longtime farmer in Wharton. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Dornak Viktorin, with whom he celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2004. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton, the Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post 87, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the KJT in Hungerford. Not only will Mr. Viktorin be remembered as a good Christian man, but as a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend, and neighbor. Mr. Viktorin served in the United States Army from 1943 to 1946, training in California, Washington, North Carolina, and Illinois. He served in England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany during World War II. It was his honor to provide a service to his country and to be a part of helping to make the world a better place. He never felt that his time in the military was spent in vain. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 17, at the Wharton Funeral Home and a funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 18, at Holy Family Catholic Church with Rev. Don Ruppert officiating. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery in Hungerford with military graveside honors provided by American Legion Post No. 87 of Wharton. In addition to his wife, Mr. Viktorin is survived by his son, Allen Viktorin, and daughter-in-law, Cindy, of Sugar Land; daughter, JoAnn Fain of Duncanville; son, Mark Viktorin, and daughter-in-law, Wilma, of Frisco; son, Paul Viktorin, and daughter-in-law Nancy, of Smithville, and daughter, Lisa Viktorin, of Houston. In addition, Mr. Viktorin is survived by seven grandchildren: Katy Fain of Duncanville, Vanessa and Scott Viktorin of Sugar Land, Elizabeth and Allison Viktorin of Smithville, Julie Joyce of Frisco and Tammy Lenaberg of League City, and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister, Agnes Matula and her husband, Bob, and one brother, R. L. Viktorin, and wife, Tillie. In addition to his parents, Mr. Viktorin was preceded in death by one sister, Annie Klima. Pallbearers will be Scott Viktorin, Larry Viktorin, Johnnie Viktorin, Kenneth Valka, Frank Kacal and Jordan Moore. Honorary pallbearers will be Kevin Shannon of Butte, Montana; Murray Braunstein from New York, New York; and Frank Platek of Lisle, Illinois, all WWII combat buddies from the 788th Field Artillery, and another Army friend, Barney Millard of Forsyth, Missouri. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Dr. Martin Hrgovcic and Becky Macha of Diagnostic Clinic in Houston for their care and concern, and to Lauri Lewis, Mr. Viktorin's caregiver and friend for the past 15 months. In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to Holy Family Catholic Church, 2011 Briar Lane, Wharton, TX 77488, or to St. John's Catholic Church, P. O. Box 121, Hungerford, TX 77448.
