Bio

E.N. (Nuge) Johnson, who had been confined to his bed most of the past year, died at his family home at Afton about 8:30 o'clock Monday evening. Bright's disease and heart trouble seemed to be the cause of death. Funeral services were held at the Afton Methodist church Tuesday afternoon at four o'clock. Rev. E.L. Naugle, the pastor, conducted the services. Interment followed in Afton Cemetery with Ward's Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Active pallbearers were: Johnnie Koonsman, L.D. Ratliff, Horace D. Nickels, M.B. Gage, W.F. Foreman, Alton Chapman and a long list of honorary pallbearers was selected. Survivors are: the widow, Mrs. Emma Montgomery Johnson; three children, Paula Mae, Margie Nell and Nuge, Jr., all at home; one sister, Mrs. Paul Braddock; the aged mother, Mrs. J.E. Johnson; one aunt, Mrs. H.V. Johnson; and one cousin, Mrs. D.W. Sims, all of Afton community. Mr. Johnson was comparatively a young man. He was born in Hunt County September 16, 1891, and would have been 47 years of age on his next birthday. He came with his parents to Dickens county in December 1905 when a boy fourteen. He was married to Miss Emma Montgomery February 17, 1911 and they enjoyed a very happy home. Six children came into the home, and three survive. Mr. Johnson had never affiliated with any church. However, he stated a few days before his demise that he was ready to go then the summons came. He served his community in various ways. He was a member of the school board sometime, and the past ten years has served Precinct No. 2 as County Commissioner. During his terms as Commissioner, his mature judgement and keen business incite has been invaluable to Dickens County. He was a man who held the respect and love of his neighbors, and everybody spoke of him as a good man. The Dickens County Times, September 1, 1938 Transcribed September 2004, B.Hodges
