Sophia Thelma (Grout) Ruffing (December 2, 1913 - October 27, 1976) The Lusk Herald November 4, 1976 Sophia Thelma Ruffing Sophia Ruffing, Lusk Business Woman for 14 years, died in the Torrington hospital last Wednesday evening. Funeral service was conducted at the Peet Mortuary Chapel at 2:00 Saturday afternoon. Mrs. Ruffing operated the Diner, restaurant until 1973 when ill health forced her retirement. Prior to that she operated the South Side Cafe. Sophia Thelma Ruffing was born Dec. 2, 1913 at Albion, Neb., the daughter of Fred and Amanda Wittenburg Grout. The family moved to Broken Bow when she was a small child and there she started school. In 1927 they moved to Node where she attended grade school. She graduated from Lusk High School in 1932. May 22, 1933, she and Henry G. Ruffing were married. They ranched north of Lusk until 1959 when she began operating the South Side Cafe. Sept. 15, 1962, she purchased the Diner. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and two brothers. She is survived by a son, Kenneth of Riverton, a daughter, Jean (Mrs. Freddie Thomas) of Lusk; a sister, Mrs. Don (Hazel) Cooper of Torrington and seven grandchildren. The Rev. Frank Bozart conducted the funeral. Mrs. Edna DeCastro was organist, and Mrs. Marilyn Cockerham sang "Why Me Lord" and "Beyond the Sunset." Casket bearers were Henry Wasserburger, Jr., Jim Wasserburger, Jim Meng, Ed Boner, Horace Graham and Oliver Pate.
