FORT SCOTT — Mary Cook, 96, of Fort Scott died Friday, Nov. 30, 2012, at Fort Scott Manor. She was born on April 13, 1916, in Auxvase, Mo., to Scott and Belva (Shirkey) Golden. Following high school, she obtained a two-year teacher's degree from Pittsburg State Teachers College. She married Paul Asher Cook on Dec. 23, 1944. He preceded her in death on March 22, 1999. She taught fifth and sixth grades for the Labette County School District for several years, as well as working as a farm wife. She served as Labette County 4-H leader and enjoyed raising dogs. She was a member of Hammond United Methodist Church. Survivors include a son, Richard Cook and his wife, Linda, of Fort Scott; two daughters, Barbara Alloway and her husband, Dean, of Edna, and Susan Edwards and her husband, Jim, of Parsons; 10 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Lawrence Golden; and a sister, Mae Greer. The Rev. Tim O'Neal will conduct the service at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Cheney Witt Chapel, Fort Scott. Burial will follow in the U.S. National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel. Memorials are suggested to Hammond United Methodist Church and may be left in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 347, 201 S.
