Edgefield, while on duty as a Dallas Firefighter. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ THE DALLAS MORNING NEWS DALLAS, TEXAS, SUNDAY, DECEMBER 3, 1944 Fireman Dies, 3 Hurt As Truck, Car Collide One person was killed and three others were injured, one critically. Saturday when a fire department emergency truck, speeding to a gas suffocation case, and an automobile collided on a curving hill at Fort Worth Avenue and North Edgefield. Dead on arrival at Methodist Hospital was E. L. Hughen, 706 Santa Monica, 38-year-old member of the fire department's emergency squad. He succumbed to a head injury. Hughen's death brings the traffic toll to thirty-three inside the city limits and eighty-six in Dallas County. In a critical condition at the same hospital was Arthur Mackey, 14, of 1614 Rowan, one occupant of the automobile, suffering head injuries. Also injured were W. E. Lawrence, 24, of 810 Parkview, driver of the emergency truck, and 16-year-old R. W. Tucker, driver of the automobile who resides at James and Elm, off the Chalk Hill road. Neither was believed in a critical condition. Lawrence, with a double compound fracture of the left leg and shock, was at Baylor Hospital, while Tucker, at Parkland, had a head injury that physicians did not believe would be fatal. Witnesses said that the light automobile was going east on Fort Worth Avenue and turned left at Edgefield when it was struck by the emergency truck, which was carrying a pulmotor west in answer to a call to the Arroyo Ranch Courts, 1850 Fort Worth Avenue. Both vehicles plunged high into the air, the fire truck striking a power pole seven feet from the ground. A near-by fire plug and a concrete street sign were clipped off by the colliding vehicles. Dallas Power and Light Company crewmen were soon at the scene and restored electric service in the vicinity in nine minutes. McCommas ambulance Driver F. M. Buckalew said that Hughen died en route to the hospital. Buckalew was en route on the same emergency call to the tourists cabin and stopped to pick up Hughen. Seaman First Class Howard H. Higgins, 19, a Seabee on leave after being overseas, and his 20 year old wife, Joan Higgins, were revived at Parkland after they had been found unconscious in a cabin, almost lifeless due to suffocation. En route to the hospital with the suffocation victims, a wheel broke off the McCommas ambulance and an Oneal ambulance was called to transport Mrs. Higgins tot he hospital. A city ambulance, driven by A. E.
