DAYTON - Velma Eunice (Jackson) Buie, 80, of Conroe died on Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, in Park Manor Nursing Home in Conroe. She was born on Jan. 20, 1922 in Tarkington Prairie, where she grew up with her six older siblings. At a very early age, around 6, she came to know Christ as her personal savior while attending Rural Shade Baptist Church. She graduated from Tarkington High School and pursued her interest in religion while attending Bible School in Houston. In May of 1941, she married Leldon Garland Stephenson and they had two daughters, Diane and Lelda. She continued to share her faith and her Biblical knowledge by teaching Sunday school, playing her accordion and being actively involved in her church and community. But, more importantly, she made sure there was daily devotion around the dining table, which became a strong foundation for their Christian family. Mrs. Buie previously resided in Livingston, where she was an active volunteer in the Senior Citizens Center, whether serving as a clerk in the country store or involved in "clowning" or pursuing her passion for oil painting. She was an avid gardener who was particularly fond of roses and frequently took first place ribbons in competition, but also took floral arrangements to shut-ins on a regular basis. She was known as a woman of great faith who always had a smile and a wink for those she came in contact with. She was the daughter of the late Tom Jackson and the late Bettie Mills Jackson. She is survived by her two daughters, Diane Stanley of Montgomery and Lelda C. Duckworth of Birmingham, Ala. A graveside service was held Wednesday, Jan. 15, from Ryan Cemetery. Pace-Stancil Funeral Home of Dayton was in charge of arrangements.
