St. Paul Press, February 19, 1897, page 8, one of series of "Sketches of Howard County Citizens" transcribed by Linda Berney: Eli Cargill who lived down close to Palmer, is 43 years old, was born in Mo., lived in Kansas and Indian territory and 10 years Neb. He owns 160 acres of land and is a good, honest, intelligent man. I took his negative about 3 weeks ago in St. Paul. ∼ We are grieved to note the death of Eli Cargill, formerly of this place, at his home near Belfast, last Monday. For two years Mr. Cargill had suffered with cancer of the stomach, and everything possible was done for his relief. The deceased was a member of Palmer Lodge I.O.O.F. and the funeral was held today under the auspices of that order. The Palmer Journal, Palmer, Nebraska, June 6, 1918, page 1, transcribed by Linda Berney ---- Eli Cargill succumbs at his Belfast home. One of the early settlers in Mt. Pleasant precinct hears the final Message. Eli Cargill died at his home in Belfast Monday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock. Death was due to stomach trouble. Mr. Cargill, who was about 65 years old, was a native of Illinois. About thirty-five years ago he located in Howard county. Fifteen years ago next fall he and his family moved to a farm north of Belfast. Mr. Cargill moved to Belfast about six years ago. The deceased is survived by his wife, two daughters, two sons. The children are Mrs. Edward Craff, Miss Belle, Ezra and Perry. One daughter is dead. The funeral was held this morning at the Methodist church, Rev. Hull officiating. A large number of friends attended the services. Mr. Cargill was highly respected by all who knew him and his death will be keenly felt in the neighborhood where he lived. Thanks - Greeley, Nebr.
